# Can't enable "Q&A" when publishing a dashboard using a new (relationship-based) Topic — works fine with a legacy Topic

What am I doing wrong?

I recently set up Amazon Quick (QuickSight) for my company. I uploaded 3 datasets and related them through a new-style Topic (the one that supports relationships between datasets). From that Topic, I created an Analysis with a few KPI visuals.

The problem: when publishing the dashboard, I can’t check the “Allow Q&A on data” option.

In “Manage Q&A”, the setting is currently on “Use datasets” → all datasets → pointing to the Topic I created, which is also the root of the Analysis.

If I try switching to the other option, “Use a linked topic to create visual and Q&A”, it only lets me select a brand-new Topic. If I select the one I already have (the one that’s the root of the Analysis), I get an error: “Try again — Error linking the topic.”

Has anyone run into this? Is this a known limitation of the new relationship-based (multi-dataset) Topics vs. legacy Topics when it comes to enabling Q&A at publish time?

Hi @gromani and welcome to the community!

That “Allow Q&A on data” checkbox only enables through the second option, “Use a linked topic for Build Visual and Q&A,” not “Use datasets.” Once you select a topic there and hit Apply Changes, the box checks itself. So what you’re seeing on the “Use datasets” side is expected, not a bug. Here’s a related community post about this: [Cannot Enable Dashboard Q&A when publishing - #2 by Brett](https://community.amazonquick.com/t/cannot-enable-dashboard-q-a-when-publishing/51422/2) .

A few questions to narrow it down: Are you an owner (not just viewer) of the Topic and all three datasets behind it, since linking fails if ownership is missing on any of them? Had the Topic fully finished building and indexing before you tried, or was it still processing? And does it still error after a page refresh or fresh browser session, since the publish dialog can hold a stale state after you switch between the two Q&A options? Once we get those answers, we can provide more tailored assistance.

Hope this helps and please feel free to keep us updated!

Thanks, I understand. That way, a legacy topic is always created for the AI, from what I see.

I have another question. If I create a topic beforehand (one of the new ones, with the related datasets in the diagram) and then from that topic I generate an analysis, why can’t I select the same topic for the AI Q&A?
I try this and I get the “try again” error.

Hi @gromani ,

The dashboard Q&A link only accepts legacy topics right now, and your relationship-based (multi-dataset) topic is a different version under the hood, so the operation that attaches it at publish time rejects it, which is the “try again” error you’re hitting. A couple of other folks ran into the exact same thing with new-style topics, and the Quick team confirmed only legacy topics can be linked for now and logged it as a feature request. The docs back this up too: the [Manage topic permissions through dashboards](https://docs.aws.amazon.com/quicksuite/latest/userguide/gen-bi-manage-topic-permissions.html) page notes right at the top that its linked-topic Q&A flow is for legacy topics.
