Quicksight dynamic filters

Hello team, can we have the filters showing only the relevant data based on the other filters in quicksight? Lets say I have two sets A and B, when I select an option in A, only the relevant data should show up when In try to filter option B. For example, I have set A as countries with USA and Canada, and my set B has Chicago, Tampa, Toronto. When I filter A by clicking on USA, the filter B should only show the options Chicago and Tampa. Is there a way we can do this as my filters show all the values irrespective of the other filters on the same visual.

Thank you.

Hi @tivinayz ,

Yes you should be able to do this in Quick Sight based on how I am understanding your use case. What you need to do is Quick Sight supports this natively through cascading filter controls.

Edit your city filter control, and enable “Show relevant values only”, then select your country control as the parent. After that, picking USA in the country filter will automatically limit the city dropdown to only Chicago and Tampa.

One thing to note is that both controls must use columns from the same dataset, the child (city) must be a dropdown or list style pulling values from the filter (not “specific values”), and the parent (country) must be a string filter control or a string/integer/numeric parameter control.

Here are a couple of resources to reference as you set this up: filter controls docs and a previous community post that walks through a similar scenario.

Hope this helps!

Hi @tivinayz

You can use the Show relevant values only feature in the Parameter Control. It will ask you the related control. So you set this up for your Parameter Control B and say it is related to Parameter Control A

Hi team, thank you for the information.
@JacobR I have tried this approach and was able to filter it. I took both my filters and under relevant values checked the value corresponding to the other.
For example, under relevant values for city, I have checked the country and vice versa, so if I select a particular city, only the relevant country is showing up and if I select a country, only the cities within that country are showing up.

I have a new issue here : I unchecked both of the filters and I do not see anything populating here and the dashboard is not allowing me to show any data. I was able to fix that when I did the reset to original button but this also happens in the analysis tab. Any workaround for the same.

Hi @tivinayz ,

Glad the cascading setup is working. The blank dashboard when you deselect both filters is expected behavior with a bidirectional “Show relevant values only” configuration. It creates a circular dependency where each filter looks at the other’s selection to populate its values, so when both are empty, neither can recover and the whole thing deadlocks.

The simplest fix is to keep the cascade one-directional: set “Show relevant values only” on your city control with country as the parent, but remove it from the country control. Country should always show its full list regardless of what’s selected in city. That way, clearing both filters still lets country repopulate, and you can make a fresh selection without needing to hit reset.
