Amazon Quick Suite Usage & Billing Visibility

Hi,

I’m looking for some guidance from the community on Amazon Quick Suite usage and billing.

I previously had an Amazon QuickSight account with users assigned the Reader role. Recently, I enabled Quick Suite features, and those users have now been upgraded to the Reader Pro role.

I’d like to better understand how usage is tracked and billed, especially at the individual user level.

Specifically:

  • Is there a way to see usage broken down by individual user?
  • Can I monitor this usage throughout the month?
  • Is there a dashboard, report, or API that shows current consumption and estimated costs?
  • What is the best way to monitor usage so I can avoid unexpected charges at the end of the billing period?
  • Also, how is usage actually measured in Quick Suite—is it token-based, request-based, or another billing model?

Any recommendations or examples of how others are monitoring this would be greatly appreciated.

Hi @Noorali , all great questions.

First - general note on pricing - I’d consult this page for Quick Sight and this page for general Quick pricing. The first provides a breakdown of the licensing cost changes, and the differences between Reader and Reader Pro license levels. The second link details general Quick pricing.

And as for your questions:

  1. Usage broken down by user: The options out of the box for activity by user are limited based on what you’re describing. Best practices for tracking who is using what, when generally involve some combination of CloudWatch and CloudTrail. I’d recommend checking out this thread for a more detailed breakdown of each service and what level of monitoring each provides.
  2. Can you monitor usage throughout the month: Yes - you will need to setup CloudTrail and Athena, which will allow you to set up a usage data source + data set. Using this, you will be able to create Quick Sight visuals that will track usage (the thread above also details this)
  3. Current consumption / estimated costs: I would strongly recommend reviewing the AWS billing console for this; this will give you a breakdown of the exact costs, itemized, for your Quick instance - as well as straight line projections for the current month. My experience is that costs for Quick Sight are fairly predictable (cost mainly a function of your # of licenses * the tier of those licenses, plus the infrastructure fee, plus SPICE consumption); Quick pricing is more variable and scales with actual usage, with agent hours and index storage (used by knowledge bases) being metered beyond a certain point
  4. Monitoring Usage: There is a Billing and Cost Management API which is a great place to start. You can use this to extract point in time snapshots of current pricing, and more.
  5. How usage is measured: It’s a combination of license costs, infrastructure fees, SPICE consumption, and metered agent hours consumption. I’d get familiar with the top two links in this post

All that said - this reflects my own experience with the tool - I’d start with the links included in this post, which are more authoritative, to get started.

Good luck!

Dave
