I am working on a dashboard with multiple KPI visuals side-by-side, tracking different metrics (e.g., Sales, Leads, etc.).
Currently, my calculated fields are named specifically for the metric they measure (e.g., Current Sales, Previous Sales (period-Over-period comparison), Current Leads Previous Leads etc). However, because the visual titles already indicate the metric (e.g., “Sales” or “Leads”), I want the inner labels of the KPI visuals to simply say “Current” and “Previous” across the board. This would make the dashboard look much cleaner, more formal, and consistent.
I want to change these display names without editing the underlying calculated field names in the dataset( and quicksight wont allow the same names for different calculated fields, honestly not the best way to have your naming convention like that) as I still need those specific names for other charts and maintenance.
As far as I can tell, there isn’t an out-of-the-box option in the “Format visual” pane to override these specific sub-labels in a KPI chart.
My Questions:
-
Is there a hidden workaround to alias or rename these specific labels strictly within the KPI visual’s formatting?
-
If not, can this be flagged as a feature request? Giving authors the ability to customize the primary/secondary value labels in KPIs would be a huge help for dashboard UI/UX.
Thank you for your help in advance.
Hi @Chaithra and welcome to the community!
Just to make sure I am understanding you correctly, you want to rename KPIs so they have a different title than its calc field?
If your are referring to the KPI visual, then you can click on your KPI and click ‘Format Visual’, on the right hand side, you’ll see an option to edit the KPI Title and Subtitle. You can then edit each one to say “Current” and “Previous,” but you will have to do this for each KPI. This will only effect the visual, not its calc field.
This is the end result:
Hope this helps and feel free to reply with any questions/clarifications about this topic.
Hi Cesar,
Thank you for the above.
Here’s a visual example to explain the issue better
The above attached image shows sample KPIs calculated period over period, Current would indicate the currently selected date and Previous indicates the selected date ranges previous month or week or year etc. Now, the issue is the repetition of metric names next to Current and Previous.
While the headers already help define the KPI , the calculated fields doesn’t need to repeat the same KPI names in it. If i were to just have Current and Previous under each KPI to keep it standardized and visually pleasant without repeated words, I can’t, due to Quicksight limitation where two of the same calculated fields cant have the same name, which absolutely makes sense, but if there was an option to edit the column names added to KPI visualization in the Format/Properties panel like we have it for tables, where you add date/ any field to the table , you have an option to change the column/ rows names to desired words or capitals/smalls, that would be great.
Currently, edit field names option is not present for KPI viz alone.
The period over period was just one instance, be it any scenario where we add a to KPI viz, we cant edit it on Properties, can only do it with Calculated fields or change in the dataset itself, which is slightly inefficient.
(Unfortunately, i’m unable to upload another snip)
Hope this helps understand the problem better. Thank you
Hi @Chaithra,
Thank you for clarifying. I believe I understand the issue now. You’re right, Quick Sight does not currently allow you to rename the field labels inside a KPI visual from the Format/Properties panel. Tables have this ability (you can rename column headers directly in the properties), but KPI visuals do not. So if you have multiple KPI visuals and want each one to just display “Current” and “Previous” as the inner labels, you are unfortunately stuck because you cannot have two calculated fields with the same name in a dataset.
The only workaround that I can think of at this moment is placing text boxes on top of your KPIs and then using the correct name within the text boxes. Here is an example where I have two text boxes with ‘Current’ and ‘Previous’ inside of each and then placed on top of the KPI. I’d recommend making the Selection and Border of the text boxes ‘hidden’ so that it looks cleaner.
I will also go ahead and mark this as a ‘feature-request’ and archive this post so that it promotes visibility to the product team.
